About Hydrocephalus
One in 500 babies are born with Hydrocephalus in the US, or around 8,000 every year. It is a life-long disorder where fluid builds up in the skull, putting pressure on the brain that can cause death if not treated in time. A VP shunt is the standard treatment. The shunt has the highest failing rate of any medically implanted devise. This is the most common brain surgery in children. Every 15 minutes this surgery is performed in the US. Medical costs for Hydrocephalus are over $1 billion per year, but the funding received by the NIH is only $1 million per year. Even though Hydrocephalus is twice as common as Down syndrome it receives only 1/19 of the federal funding. In the past 50 years, there has been no significant improvement in treatment and no improvement in prevention or care.
