Simplified Explanation

Croup is caused when the trachea or throat swells and partially closes off, normally due to a virus, producing stridor and a “barking” cough. Pfeiffer’s kids are prone to trachea abnormalities and may experience recurrent croup.

Treatment

Treatment for croup includes steroids, nebulized breathing treatments such as Helium and in severe cases a breathing tube is needed. For recurrent croup, surgically removing the tonsils and the adenoids may give enough space in the throat to reduce the likelihood of developing croup with minor illnesses. If this is not helping, a breathing tube (Endotracheal Tube) might be necessary.
